Are you looking for a fresh approach to family Bible time? Learning to Speak Life™ series – Fruit of the Spirit Family Bible study guide – is just what you are looking for! This fun 9-week family Bible study guide is geared for families with young children ages 3-12. It examines the fruit of the Spirit according to Galatians 5:22-23 – teaching children how to speak God’s life-giving words in place of words that tear down and destroy.

The Bible Study Guide includes the following sections:

Primary Scripture – This will be the basis for the lesson in each chapter. This is designed to give your family a foundation in memorizing God’s Word pertaining to learning about the fruit of the Spirit.

What is…? – This section examines what each fruit is. For instance, in the first chapter we talk about love. So the question will be asked, “What is Love?” We examine and define it from a biblical perspective to ensure that each family member is on the same page when learning about the fruit of the Spirit in each individual chapter.

Confessions – We designed some sentences for your family to read and confess out loud to help reinforce what you are learning about the fruit of the Spirit. This section also gets your family into the habit of memorizing and speaking God’s life-giving word. This is a great way to begin the habit of changing your mindset to line up with the Word of God instead of being led by your emotions.

Copywork – This is designed to help your children commit to speaking positive words that line up with scripture. Each chapter has copywork designed for children ages 7+ as well as suggestions for children 6 and under.

Role Play {Inspiration} – We created some fun role playing activities to help your family see what each fruit of the Spirit looks like in action. Prepare to have a lot of fun!

Silly Sayings – These are tongue twisters to help your family learn key components of each fruit of the Spirit. Say them quickly to maximize the silliness!

Short Story – Every chapter houses a short story that will display a lesson about the fruit of the spirit being discussed. This gives your family the chance to really see how important obedience to God’s word is in every day life.

Family Discussion Time – This section is designed to help facilitate family discussions about what everyone is learning in each chapter. It is a great time to address any questions or suggestions on how your family can grow in the area of speaking God’s word.

Family Project – Each chapter includes some ideas for family projects that will inspire you to behave according to the fruit of the Spirit as well as increase cohesion within the family unit.

Prayer – Each section has a prayer that your family can pray together as you seek to honor God by learning about and modeling the fruit of the Spirit in your day-to-day lives.

Digging Deeper – For those of you who want to go even deeper than the 10 sections above, we’ve created some more ideas for your family to explore at the end of each chapter.

As a family who previously hadn’t found our niche in Bible studies, this book has made learning fun for our WHOLE family (kids and adults alike) because of its uniquely entertaining structure.

The book is comprised of 9 chapters, each of which focuses on a specific theme from Love to Self-Control, with family activities for each chapter. My 4 and 6 year old children especially get a kick out of the Silly Sayings and love acting out the Role Plays that are included with each theme. My husband and I have been impressed at the depth of our Family Discussions and love that there are Family Projects to work on as a team.

This book has helped our family establish a regular and very fun Bible reading routine. From the ideas in this book we’ve been able to overcome our fear of “messing up” when it comes to teaching our family about Jesus. This book opened up our eyes and really made us do the work we were always expecting others to do. Thank you so much to the authors Mike + Carlie for writing this. It really changed our family!

I’ll be honest: I’m usually wary of the label “fresh approach” when it comes to the Bible, because I’ve seen a lot of watering down of the scriptures and the authority of God’s word in favor of entertaining stories, attracting a larger audience, and blending in with the culture. I am looking for Bible studies that teach God’s word with integrity, retaining its authority and relevance while helping us apply it in our daily lives.

I’m happy to report that Learning to Speak Life: Fruit of the Spirit is far from a watered down, family entertainment approach! Instead, the central focus is God’s word as the starting point, and from that starting point, Learning to Speak Life provide a variety of approaches and activities to bring those words “to life” in your family. Learning to Speak Life is designed to help your family develop a habit of speaking God’s life-giving words into your daily lives and circumstances, through meditating on and memorizing scripture, and reinforcing the the message of key scriptures with hands-on family activities throughout the week and family prayer time. It’s intended to be used over nine weeks, for families with children ages 3-12, however I think the format is still flexible enough to change up the time frame and include older or younger children.

I personally enjoy the “confessions of faith” that are provided for each particular fruit — again using God’s word as a framework for speaking truth out loud in the form of statements that help us renew our minds. Memorizing the key verses is the most important step, however I like the reinforcement of the message through the use of confessions of faith.

The role playing, silly sayings, and other creative activities may not always be a hit with each child depending on their comfort with such things and personality types (shyness, etc.), however there’s enough variety to include all your children in demonstrating how to “live out” the message of each chapter.

I’m excited to finish out the full nine weeks with my three daughters (12, 10 and 6).

I am grateful for books like this. It is written in a way that teaches not only the parent but the child how to be a better person, how to better study Gods word as individuals and as a family. Learning to speak life teaches the family to become one in Gods word as a unit in such a fun and innovative way, it makes it hard to resist the fun. It is well organized which allows more time to actively participate in the word and the different games and exercises are set up to create a natural habit to reading, learning, and applying Gods word in our lives. Whether you are a seasoned servant or freshly new this book is definitely a keeper. I would love to see this as a group study in the church as well.

We love this book! Everything you need to start family bible study with children of all ages. My six year old daughter loves the role playing. Even if bible study is already a part of your family’s routine, I recommend purchasing this book. It is different from your average bible study. It would also be a great resource to add to your homeschool curriculum or Sunday School curriculum. The book is affordable and small enough to carry anywhere you go. You never know when you’ll be stuck somewhere with your children and need to keep them occupied. Great book! I encourage you to purchase. Michael and Carlie, thank you for writing this book!

Such a needed book! I know that I catch my self at times speaking harshly at my children, beyond what is called for. You know–just being mean. I know that none of us are perfect, but as Christian parents, we need to be reminded to make the extra effort. Our family should be our first ministry.

Learning to Speak Life: Fruit of the Spirit is a family devotional book covering each of the nine fruits of the Spirit. Covering each fruit in about a week, the study can be completed in about nine weeks.

Each lesson contains multiple features, including a short story, copywork, role play (very helpful for practical application), and much more. One or more of these activities are certain to appeal to each child, no matter what their age or learning style.

If you’re looking for a devotional guide that will work for your entire family, give this book a try!

Honestly, I have never found any family bible study that involves the whole family member without any tendency of dominance like this book. Usually a bible study guide has a tendency to be serious most of the time so that it makes younger kids can follow in fewer time. On the other hand, there is also a bible study guide which only aimed for younger children or teenagers only.

Learning to Speak Life: Fruit of the Spirit is aimed for discussing 9 fruits of spirits as mentioned in Galatians 5:22 –23 (NLT): love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control for 9 weeks. In each of the topic, some methods are involved to include all members of the family in fun ways without loosing the meaning of them.

This bible study guide shows a balance of fun and seriousness in each of the topic in the week. The scripture, the confessions, the copywork, the prayer, and digging deeper have a normally serious atmosphere in our family. The “What is…” section, The Silly Saying, the short story, the family discussions, Family Projects, and the role play are very flexible in atmosphere. I mean they can turn t be serious, but they also can be serious sometimes.

We can use this study guide anytime in the year. It is not the seasonal ones, but we can use it in any season of the year. Thanks a lot for such kind of great bible study methods in our family.

Let me tell you that I was super impressed before I even started reading the Bible Study. This is why the Learning to Speak Life Series was created “to help you develop the habit of speaking life-giving words over your life and circumstances rather than speaking the empty words that our emotions lead us to speak when we are faced with uncertainty or challenges in our daily walk with God.” Sign me up for the whole series!

Fruit of the Spirit is geared towards families with children ages 3-12. There truly is something for everyone in the lessons. The Kercheval’s say, “We believe that in order to change the words you speak, you must meditate on Bible scriptures, confess scriptures and positive confessions that line up with the Bible, write the scriptures, and reinforce all of this through family activities and prayer.” Amen. Are you ready to buy this book yet?

Just in case you aren’t familiar with the fruits of the Spirit, the focus of the study is on Galatians 5:22-23, so the 9 fruits of the Spirits being covered are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. In order to really internalize the lesson, it is suggested that families cover one fruit of the Spirit for one week. Which would make this a 9 week Bible Study.

This is my favorite part. Each of the nine sections includes: Scripture, a What Is…? section to really explain what the fruit is for the week, 5 confessions of faith tailored around the fruit, copy work for older children, a simplified version for younger children, role play for the families to act out, a silly saying, a short story, a family project, prayer, and a section for digging deeper. I love the confessions, copy work sections, and family project. Although my children are still too young to actually do the copy work, they can totally draw a picture of the sentences given.

If you are looking for family Bible Study, I highly recommend Fruit of the Spirit. I can not wait for the other books in the series to be released. We will definitely be coming back to this study again and again.
